FOCUSED SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

FOCUSED SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

Focused Shockwave Therapy (FSWT) is a non-invasive treatment that delivers high-energy acoustic waves into targeted musculoskeletal tissue.

Unlike radial pressure-wave treatments, where energy spreads more broadly and is concentrated closer to the surface, focused shockwave technology can concentrate acoustic energy at a specific treatment depth and location.

This allows us to precisely target certain tendons, muscles, and other musculoskeletal structures based on the condition being treated.

HOW FOCUSED SHOCKWAVE WORKS

Focused shockwaves are acoustic pressure waves that travel through tissue and deliver mechanical energy to a targeted area.

The mechanical stimulus produced by shockwave therapy has been studied for its effects on biological processes involved in tissue remodeling and repair.

Treatment parameters, including energy level, depth, frequency, and number of pulses, can be adjusted based on the tissue, condition, and treatment goals.

FOCUSED VS. RADIAL SHOCKWAVE

Not every device marketed as “shockwave therapy” produces the same type of energy.

Radial pressure-wave therapy generates pressure waves that disperse outward from the applicator and are strongest closer to the surface.

Focused shockwave therapy generates acoustic waves that can converge at a selected depth within the tissue.

Both technologies have clinical applications, but focused shockwave gives us the ability to deliver energy more precisely to deeper or specifically targeted structures.

CONDITIONS COMMONLY TREATED

Focused shockwave may be considered for certain persistent musculoskeletal conditions, including:

Plantar fasciopathy • Achilles tendinopathy • Patellar tendinopathy • Tennis elbow • Golfer's elbow • Certain rotator cuff and shoulder tendon conditions • Chronic tendon pain • Other selected musculoskeletal injuries

Whether focused shockwave is appropriate depends on your diagnosis, medical history, and examination.

WHAT DOES TREATMENT FEEL LIKE?

The applicator is positioned over the targeted tissue and delivers a series of acoustic pulses.

Patients typically feel repetitive tapping or pulsing sensations. Treatment intensity can be adjusted based on the condition, treatment objective, and patient tolerance.

Sessions are relatively brief and require no injections or incisions.

FOCUSED SHOCKWAVE FOR ATHLETES

Persistent tendon injuries can be particularly frustrating for athletes because reducing pain alone doesn't necessarily restore the tissue's ability to tolerate training and competition.

When appropriate, we combine focused shockwave with mobility, progressive loading, therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, and other rehabilitation strategies.
